What Is a KNX Smart Home? What to Know Before Your Project

Learn how to plan lighting, climate control, shading, sensors, wall controls and infrastructure before starting a KNX smart home project.

A successful smart home is not created by product selection alone. The requirements must be coordinated with the architectural, electrical and mechanical designs at the right time. KNX provides an open framework for bringing functions and certified devices from different manufacturers into one coordinated system. This guide puts the main decisions for a new villa or residential project into a practical order.

What is KNX?

KNX is an open international standard that allows building functions such as lighting, heating and cooling, blinds, security, energy management and user interfaces to communicate. Certified products use a common language, so designers can evaluate devices from different brands without tying the whole project to a single manufacturer.

Core functions can be designed to operate locally. Lighting, climate and shading scenarios can therefore continue to work inside the building without a permanent internet connection, while remote access is planned as a separate, secure layer.

What can a KNX smart home integrate?

  • Switching, dimming and preset lighting scenes
  • Blinds, curtains, awnings and solar-shading control
  • Underfloor heating, fan-coils, air conditioning and room temperature
  • Motion, presence, daylight, temperature and air-quality sensors
  • Door, window and alarm information within automation scenarios
  • Touch panels, mobile applications and central visualisation
  • Energy metering, load monitoring and selected load management
  • Project-specific integration with intercom and audio-video systems

Not every function has to be installed on day one. The important point is to plan both immediate needs and reasonable future extensions in the infrastructure.

Eight decisions to make before work starts

1. Room-by-room requirements and scenes

“I want a smart home” is not a technical brief. Prepare a separate function list for the living room, kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, terraces and shared spaces. Define which circuits should respond to arrival, leaving, night, guest, cleaning and holiday scenes.

2. Lighting circuits and dimming methods

Decide which luminaires are switched and which are dimmed before the electrical design is final. Decorative fittings, linear LEDs and outdoor lighting may require different drivers or control protocols. These decisions directly affect panel channels, cabling and product selection.

3. Shading infrastructure

Motor type, supply arrangement, limits and window groups must be known before blind or curtain control can be finalised. If automatic solar shading is required, façade orientation, sunlight, wind information and safety scenarios should also be considered.

4. Heating, cooling and thermostat strategy

Underfloor heating, radiators, fan-coils and split air conditioners have different control requirements. Coordinate the thermostat with the mechanical equipment: will it display temperature only, or also manage fan speed, operating mode and setpoints?

5. Sensor placement

Coverage alone is not enough. Viewing angle, mounting height, daylight and the way a room is used all matter. Corridors, bathrooms, dressing rooms and outdoor areas need different detection strategies. Poor placement can cause unnecessary switching and frustrate users.

6. Switches, sockets and user interfaces

Button count, icons, thermostat functions, frame colour and surface finish should be coordinated with the interior design. 7. Mobile access and visualisation

Define the rooms shown in the app, user permissions, notifications and remote-access expectations in advance. Keep internet access separate from local control, and include network, security and backup requirements in the handover documentation.

8. Panel capacity and future expansion

A panel sized only for day-one equipment may require disruptive work later. Plan spare module space, power-supply capacity, line topology, labelling and service access from the beginning.

What does multi-brand freedom provide?

KNX sensors, switches, actuators, thermostats and visualisation products do not all have to come from one manufacturer. Products can be selected according to technical compatibility, function, design, service and budget. However, a KNX label alone is not enough: communication objects, parameters and suitability for the intended scenes must be checked during engineering.

Why do the ETS project and documentation matter?

ETS is the manufacturer-independent engineering software used to address KNX devices, set their parameters and define how they interact. Handover should include the current ETS project file, panel drawings, group-address descriptions, the device list and operating scenarios. Clear documentation makes maintenance and future extensions faster and safer.

How does a new build differ from an existing home?

In a new build, containment, cable routes, panels and field devices can be coordinated with the architecture. In an existing home, the permissible building work, current wiring, wireless or hybrid options and protected finishes become decisive. In both cases, creating a product list before a site survey is the wrong starting point.
