Evaluate mechanisms, frames, finishes, back-box standards and KNX compatibility together with the architecture when selecting switches and sockets.

Switches and sockets are among the most frequently touched electrical elements in a project. Selection therefore involves more than choosing a colour from a catalogue. The function schedule, installation infrastructure, module standard, automation strategy and interior design must be evaluated together. Good planning prevents missing mechanisms, incompatible frames and disruptive wall changes later.

Start with the function schedule, not the colour chart

List the required functions for every space: conventional switching, dimming, two-way control, power sockets, UPS outlets, USB charging, data, TV, thermostats, blind control, KNX push buttons and touch panels. Then define how many modules each function requires and how they will be grouped within frames.

Choosing a series without this schedule may reveal too late that a required mechanism is unavailable or that a multi-gang frame does not fit the intended wall area.

Why do back-box, module and frame standards matter?

Check the flush box dimensions, module system, horizontal or vertical installation and multi-gang frame options for the chosen family. Different series may use different support structures and module widths. Finalising the selection before wall boxes are closed is the safest approach.

  • Check the external dimensions of single and multi-gang frames.
  • Mark horizontal or vertical orientation on the interior drawings.
  • Confirm that power, data and multimedia mechanisms fit the same support system.
  • Coordinate wall-finish thickness with the back box and fixing depth.

How is a KNX push button different from a conventional switch?

A conventional switch operates a circuit directly or triggers an input module. A KNX push button communicates on the bus and can send lighting, shading, temperature or scene commands from one interface. The choice changes panel design, cabling and commissioning.

Two products that look similar may use completely different mechanisms. In addition to frame and key codes, the support, bus connection, input interface and thermostat functions should be explicit in the product schedule.

What should you check when selecting colours and finishes?

Matt, gloss, metal, glass, wood and paintable surfaces behave differently under light. Review a physical sample next to the actual paint, stone, timber or wallpaper—not only on a catalogue screen. Check it under daylight and evening lighting.

  • Evaluate tone differences and shadow lines on light walls.
  • Consider fingerprints and cleaning on dark or metallic finishes.
  • Confirm that the selected frame, trim and key combination is actually produced.
  • Consider thermostat displays, icons and status LEDs during night use.

How should multi-gang frames be arranged?

Grouping several functions in one frame creates a clean appearance, but frequency of use and accessibility still matter. Position lighting and shading controls at entrances, and place power and data outlets around the furniture plan. Prepare separate combination drawings for bedside areas, TV walls and desks.

Use a sample board and room matrix

A sample board made from real products lets the team evaluate colour, finish, icons, tactile feel and installation spacing together. Use a room matrix to track the box quantity, frame size, mechanism code, colour and orientation for every location.

Common selection mistakes

  • Selecting only decorative frame codes before the electrical design is complete
  • Considering the infrastructure difference between conventional and KNX mechanisms too late
  • Ignoring the module width of USB, data or TV mechanisms
  • Fixing box locations before furniture and wall-finish details
  • Failing to consider spare products, service and long-term series availability
  • Not producing one approved combination and product-code schedule

The product-code schedule is the basis of delivery

A description such as “black three-gang frame” is not precise enough for ordering or installation. Record the brand, series, frame code, support, mechanism, key or cover, finish, module count and orientation. An approved schedule gives procurement, installation and inspection teams one shared definition.
